Japanese Dramedy

Since Koko (and I) have been paranoid about going outside in the radioactive air (the levels are still relatively low and comparable by some estimates to being out in NYC on a regular day, as opposed to the higher levels up north, which is comparable to getting a chest x-ray), we have pretty much stayed home all day.

We read the news until about 7 PM. Then I decided to finally watch this Japanese drama/comedy (dramedy) series "Zettai Kareshi (Absolute Boyfriend)" that I had downloaded.

One of my friends, Nick, who is probably beyond fluent in Japanese by now, had recommended watching dramas as a way to immerse myself in the language. So I chose one randomly from www.mysoju.com (where you can watch many different Asian dramas and dramedy series) and downloaded.

Zettai Kareshi is about a girl who's unlucky in love, who sort of gets roped into signing up for a test "ideal boyfriend" android (kind of reminds me of some show back in the 80s, but I can't remember the name of it now). It's really cute, and so far, I've learned that many Japanese words and phrases have very fluid meanings. For example, "onegaishimasu" can mean "please" or "please do so" or many other things, depending on the context.

Specifically, I learned:

kanojo - girlfriend
kareshi - boyfriend
zettai - absolute(ly)
shukureemu - cream puff (like the food)

Cream puffs feature in the plot lines of two episodes now, and I have a feeling it's going to continue. Tomorrow, I'm gonna go to the Lawson and buy some of those cream puffs that they had gotten back in stock.

  1. I learned a ton of vocab from Anime. =x Sadly, it also makes me sound like a 15 year old girl when I speak.
